Drawing Center Introduction

The SOMA Drawing Center, the first of its kind in Korea, was established to highlight the importance of drawing as the foundation of all artistic creations and to enhance and expand the concept and scope of drawing
SOMA Drawing Center defines drawing as ?
  • Creative work focusing on the 'process of drawing rather than the result,' 'imagination rather than concrete concepts,' and 'experimentation rather than completion'
  • An interdisciplinary concept that includes all genres but does not distinguish between genres
  • All products of physically and spiritually creative activity, ranging from incomplete ideas to completed works
Since SOMA Drawing Center emphasizes the 'drawing process' and experimental ideas, its programs challenge the 'results-oriented’ social climate in which students live and encourages them to remember the importance of Oriental thinking. Drawing is extremely important in that drawing research and education is applicable to all fields, forming the basis of all human action within contemporary society, as it gives primary consideration to creative conception and seminal expression.
The SOMA Drawing Center first opened its doors in November 2006 with the exhibition ‘Drawn to Drawing Ⅰ&Ⅱ.’ Since then, the center has provided education on the history and aspects of drawing by presenting drawings created by eminent artists from home and abroad as well as rising young artists. The center continues to plan future drawing exhibitions, using them as a way to explore and embrace new challenges.
The center nurtures the talents of innovative capable artists by holding competitions over three times a year that show off the unique spirit of each individual artist. The center accepts applications for its competitions on an annual basis. The portfolios of selected artists are kept in individual artist files in the center’s archive, and can also be seen in the 'Archive' section of the SOMA website.
The SOMA Academy also runs drawing classes led by some of the best lecturers in Korea. The SOMA Academy also offers differentiated expert programs that focus on practical drawing techniques and art theory and criticism.
